SuilfbTdian February 15,1977 The Good Party Platform Eliott R. Good - President Eric Jackson - Vice- President Robert M. Bailey - Secretary Over the years people who have run for the senate office have constantly tried to promise "the moon" to the student body. Now there is a trend in serious candidates which attempts to be realistic in their hopes for accomplish ments. No one can promise what he/she is incapable of delivering alone. The Senate is a deliberative body within a community, ft is the job of the senate to make suggestions and recommendations to the community. But more impor tantly, it is the job of the senate to represent the students. Our platform is put together from concerns received from all parts of the community: Safety 1 - The campus lighting during night hour is insuffi cient. We must strive to keep the esthetic beauty of the campus but at the same time maintain adequate safety precautions. 2 - The interns on the halls are representatives of the housing department. This year for the first time all interns are being equipped with first aid kits. For the safety and well being of the students, the interns should be moderately skilled through various Red Cross clinics in first aid procedures. Scholarship 1 - Outside of Dana Scholarships, which combine leadership and academic excellence, no academic scholarships exists for the individual that excells only in the classroom. There is a need to reward those upper class men who have excelled in solely academic pursuits. Internships 1 - There is an urgency to incorporate the students into all phases of community life. Business, economics, and accouting majors desiring experience in their fields can be integrated into the business sector of the campus. These qualified individuals should be allowed to actually experience on the job training in their own backyard. Schools like MIT and Princeton have successfully integrated students into the business sector of the community. Incorporation of students into the food service in buying and bookkeeping can be a valuable experience. Charlie Whites' office is another area to be explored for students interested in purchasing methods. To incorporate students into the community this way gives an added dimension to their learning experience. Student-Senate Continuity 1 - It is important for the participants of the senate to re-examine their roles within this body. The Community Senate is a deliberative body that works with the entire school and concerns itself, primarily, with the needs of the students. The job of the senator is to bring news to and from this elected body. The senate should and must reach out for the student and his concerns. For a strong rapport between the senate members and the students they represent it is imperative that the senators organize bi monthly meetings with their constituents. There must be a constant flow of information and suggestions between the two groups. 2 - The executive council must meet bi-monthly with the senators in informal sessions. Continued on page 3 In accordance with the recommendation of the Elec tions Committee, Richard Phillips has agreed to take a leave of absence from his duties and responsibilities as Co-editor of the Guilfordian for the duration of the election period. Women's Coffeehouse The Women's Coalition is sponsoring a coffeehouse on Saturday, February 19 at 9:00. Susan Gingrich, Libby Winchester, Jane Taylor, and Tamara Myers will be playing individually.
